Modern Design: Coordinating Your Look With Wooden Window Blinds

Wooden window blinds will help to add a look of class and elegance to any home, regardless of the style or decor. Wood blinds just look great with any design theme. When you decorate your home with wooden window blinds, it will appear as if you have invested a lot of money into your window treatments – even if you didn’t pay a lot.

There are a lot of different styles and types of wood window blinds available to choose from. For example, you can choose to use mini blinds, woven natural blinds, vertical wood blinds, blinds for the exterior or even shutters, and there are even a number of faux wood styles available as well. Wood blinds can either be left in a natural wood finish, or you can paint your wood blinds to match your decor. If you like the look of natural wood, you can even stain your wood blinds to a darker or lighter shade if you want to make a change.

Wood blinds can be customized to suit any need, such as adding a UV or anti-static control, adding a motorized control, or even by adding a custom decorative touch. Wood blinds can also be customized to fit perfectly in windows that have unusual shapes or for windows that are sized differently than standard-size windows. There are also a number of different woods available to choose from when you purchase blinds. The most commonly used wood for blinds is basswood, however there are lots of other woods and natural fibers that are also used.

Wood blinds , like basswood blinds, can be used in just about any room in your home. Living rooms and bedrooms are excellent locations to install wood blinds, and are also probably the most popular rooms. The use of wood blinds in these rooms will give them a feeling of warmth and high-class elegance that you just won’t get with other types of blinds.

However, you will need to do a bit more regular care and upkeep with wooden window blinds. You need to lubricate them often and either oil or re-stain them about once each year. Because of the natural wooden material, these blinds can crack or warp if they are used in a room with a high humidity. This is perhaps the biggest reason why wood blinds are not used in kitchens or bathrooms. A faux wood blind will work just as well in these rooms to avoid the humidity issues experienced with natural wood blinds.

In most cases, wood blinds will also cost quite a bit more than other types of blinds. So if you are on a tight budget you might want to reconsider using natural wood. However, if you really want to get that feeling of warmth that can only come with wood blinds, perhaps some budget adjustment will be necessary.

Wooden window blinds will give you the ability to effectively control the amount of light that enters your home, and will also give you an added layer of privacy and security. The blinds can be opened, closed or adjusted to ensure that you achieve the level of light control and privacy that you desire.

If you are looking to add a touch of style and elegance to your home, wooden window blinds are just the ticket. They can even be customized to suit your needs and match your decor, making them a very versatile addition to any home. If you are looking for a unique way to upgrade your home’s decor, wooden window blinds are an excellent place to start.

Basswood comes from the basswood or linden tree and is primarily used in home furnishings like basswood blinds, cabinetry, and flooring.
Basswood is a post from: Basswood Blinds

Basswood makes beautiful furniture like wood flooring and basswood blinds, but where does basswood come from? The basswood, sometimes called the linden tree, is native to Great Britain and Eastern North America. The wood is soft, light and uniform in it’s texture, so there’s not a lot of grain to it. It’s used often in boxes and burial caskets.

The natural range of American basswood is found throughout central Quebec and Ontario down to the southeast corner of Manitoba, then south again along the eastern borders of North Dakota to northeastern Oklahoma. The southernmost limit of the natural growing area of the trees is in Northern Arkansas and Tennessee.

American basswood has two main types, sugar maple-basswood in Wisconsin and Minnesota and the the northern red oak-basswood-white ash in New England, New York, and Pennsylvania. The American basswood is a minor part of the 14 different forest types in these regions. It grown in deep and fertile loamy soils, but if the climate is right, it can grow in sandy or coarse soil. The trees leave soil very healthy, and the leaves are very high in magnesium, calcium, and contribute lots of potassium and phosphorous to soil.

A basswood tree can reach up to about 120 feet. The largest ever seen was found in northern Delaware with a diameter of 66 inches. The height and diameter growth rates are quite high. Ones found in the north are generally larger in the north. When you see them in the forest, they’re recognizable by their straight, limb free trunks that finish in a narrower and shorter crown that most of the trees around it. The bark of young American basswood trees is green, shiny, and dark. When the tree matures, it becomes grayish with deep fissures throughout.

American basswood is generally known just as basswood, but is sometimes known as American linen. There are some exotic hybrids found throughout the states, and these are usually known as lindens.

The advantage of basswood is it’s natural resistance to warping and it generally has a low occurrence of knots and other defects. Because of this, it’s often used as a veneer. It is also used in boxes, crates, mill-work, and as you know, basswood blinds!

You can buy wood blinds like 2″ Basswood blinds at many online retailers. A nice wood blind brings warmth, elegance, and beauty to your living space or office. The brands of 2″ basswood blinds you can find online are by Levolor, Graber, Bali, and own brands from Blinds.com, etc.
These are made to measure blinds, but for a 2 inch slat, the minums and maximums are about the same. The minimim width is a bout 9″ and the max width on a single headrail is usually about 96″. The maximum height of a 2″ wood blind is 120″.

The features on different window treatments do vary and the prices vary a bit as well. The Levolor premium models start at about $153, Bali 2-1/2 inch blinds at around $213, but you can get generic brands as low as $70 from online retailers.

You can order wood blinds with the popular no-holes routless option which stops light from leaking through the shade, or you can choose fabric tapes, which are decorative but also cover up the light gaps.

Because of their size, 2″ basswood blinds usually have no problem being motorized with a lift and tilt system. They can be controlled with a switch or remote control. This is great for hard to reach windows, or safety if you have small children around.

These window coverings are of a medium price, they insulate the room fairly well from heat and cold, darken the room quite well. One of the greatest things about 2″ basswood blinds is that they are so easy to clean.

Distressed Basswood Blinds

When shopping for basswood blinds and shades, you may have come across listings in catalogs or on web sites for distressed basswood blinds. This doesn’t mean the when the linden tree was upset about something before it went to the mill! It means the wood has been given a finish that makes it look aged and rustic.

Distressed Basswood Blinds and Distressed Look Furnishings

Basswood and similar timbers that are distressed are quite popular for lots of different types of home furnishings, like wood flooring, ceiling fan blades, drawers and coffee tables. Each window covering will be entirely unique with it’s own variations in grain and the distressed effect, giving some real panache to your home decor.

Distressed basswood blinds can be purchased from many online window covering retailers and at your local department stores. Many people like them because they feel they give their home a warm and cozy feel. They are definitely a huge step up from standard mini-blinds.

People with homes with hand-scraped flooring often like distressed basswood blinds. They do tend to be a slight bit more expensive than standard wood blinds because of the unique finishing, but the look is very classy and well worth the money.

1″ Basswood Blinds

1″ wood blinds are a great way to treat smaller windows in your home or office. 1″ basswood blinds are an ideal application for windows or doors with narrow sills because of the width of the wood slats. Natural wood blinds are generally available in a variety of colors, some online retailers usually have up to fourteen different colors to choose from like cherry or pine colors, including the distressed wood blind look.

1″ basswood blinds are made with 100% kiln dried basswood, which comes from the linden tree and is often used in home furnishings because of it’s attractiveness. When buying any kind of window covering, make sure it’s from a reputable dealer and that the blinds conform to the CPSC child safety guidelines.

This size of wood blind does have limitations because of the dimensions of the headrail and valance, but that is why it’s really intended for smaller more narrow windows. It can’t be motorized like 2″ basswood blinds can with battery-operated tilt systems. The maximum width of a natural wood window covering is generally going to be about 72 inches, with a maxium height of 120″. To flush mount a one inch basswood blind in a window frame, you’ll generally need at least 2 inches of space to fit the valance. An outside mind will take up to 1 1/4″. The headrail measures 1″ x 1 1/2″ and like all the other parts are color coordinated to match everything.

Mounting a 1″ basswood blind system is not difficult and most ship with all the mounting hardware included. Natural wood blinds are much more lightweight than faux wood blinds, so it’s likely an individual would have no problem installing it themselves. Always remember, if a window covering has a width of more than three feet, it can be a good idea to have assistance when installing.

Faux Wood Blinds

Faux wood blinds are a great substitution for real wood blinds, like basswood blinds, in areas that have a lot of traffic, or if there’s very high humidity. They are very durable, so they are a good solution if you own a home that you rent out, or are maybe running a small hotel as they won’t fall apart with more than average use. Faux wood blinds are actually quite a bit heavier than wooden window blinds, but they cost a lot less and the strenght of the materials makes them a great choice.

The slats on faux wood window blinds come in a smaller set of sizes than you’ll get with natural wood blinds. The material usually comes in slats that are between 1 and 2 inches in width and are made with PVC, or a made with a compound of wood pulp and PVC. The material they made with can make them much harder to lift that natural wood window coverings. The heavier slats also require more strings and ladders to support them.

For more control of the light in situations where you wish to have as much darkness as possible, Faux wood blinds with curved slats are the best. The standard flat slats are standard though, and will recreate the look of a real wood blind. The blinds have holes routed in them for the cords to pass through for raising and lowering them. These holes make little gaps and light can stream through, which can be a problem for some people. Wood blinds with no holes routed ad available and in these the cord is threaded through the slat’s edge instead. Some use a cloth tape, which are normally used for the wider slatted blinds.

If you like a lot more light to come into a room, consider a 2 1/2″ slat. This lets in more ambient light because there’s less slats needed to make it. It makes it less heavy and when it’s fully retracted it takes up a lot less space as well.

Faux wood blinds do come in different colors, but the variety is much more limited than that of the natural wood blinds. This is because of the materials the slats are made of.

Are Faux Wood Blinds Lower Quality?

Many people see faux wood blinds as lower quality, but because of the affordability factor, and the durability of the materials, they may be the best choice depending on the application. Remember, faux wood blinds can be very heavy, so when installing always make sure you use adequate backing and support and install into a window frame or studs.

Basswood Blinds

Basswood blinds, or natural wood blinds, are an affordable window covering solution to bring warmth and elegance to any living space. These wood vertical blinds have been featured quite a bit on ABC’s hit television series, Extreme Home Makeovers, as they offer the convenience of horizontal blinds without looking cheap, plus they can be made in a variety of colors as well.

Basswood Blinds In Your Home

The main appeal to basswood blinds is that they’re incredibly easy to use. They typically operate using a lift cord, but a wand tilt is used for blinds that have a width of less than 13 inches. The wand option makes them quite similar to plantation shutters.

The slats in these types of window coverings are normally 2 inches, but they can be as small as 1 inch, or as large as 2 and half inches. The same type of ladder string system you see on a venetian system holds all the slats and there’s normally a crown valance attached for flush mounting on the inside of a window frame, but they can also be installed over a window as well.

Wood window blinds cost a little more than faux wood blinds, but with basswood blinds they are very light, and are resistant to warping. Many resellers offer handsome warranties to go with them because of this fact.

The wooden slats come in a wide variety of colors. This is very advantageous because it means you can match your window treatments to other wood finishes in your home with ease right off the shelf without any kind of custom color matching. Window frames, doors, and cabinets can be matched quite closely to the colors you can find, like Pine, Cherry, and Mahogany. Distressed basswood blinds are treated to look as if they’re old and rustic, enhancing their look even more and giving you a truly unique window covering.

If nothing in your home matches the natural look, black and white wooden blinds are also a very attractive option.

Cleaning is done with relative ease, just run a feather duster between the slats. Mildew and mold isn’t normally an issue with timber blinds because of the factory finishing.

2″ wood blinds can be motorized. A lift system is installed in the valance, or head rail, at the factory which is capable of lifting and tilting the slats. Motorized blinds and shades normally come with control options like an infrared or radio frequency hand held remote control or a simple wall switch. More complex control systems can use presets, timers, and light sensors.

If you want to buy basswood blinds, you can find them in most home furnishing stores and department stores, but the best prices are generally from online retailers like blinds galore or shops like that. All window treatments are made to measure and shipped direct from the factory to your home for you to install yourself.

Installation is quite simple, and most kits will come with all the mounting hardware required to get them installed correctly. If you have problems installing your own horizontal wood blinds, some online retailers provide networks of installers all over the country who can do the job for you for a relatively low cost.

Basswood wood blinds are a great way to upgrade the look of your home with a very low cost per window. We invite you to take a look through all the pages on this website for more information on American basswood blinds, the different varieties, where to find them as well as images, videos, and pictures of basswood blinds.

We also have instructions on how to install or repair basswood blinds by Hunter Douglas, Bali, Luovolite, and other mini-blind and wood blinds manufacturers.
